Who am I

This blog is authored by artist Tobias Sternberg as an ongoing documentation of the art project The Temporary Art Repair Shop. I am a Swedish born artist, educated in London and now living in Berlin. I see myself mainly as a sculptor, but also use mediums like video, collage, performance and installation. While using these other mediums, however, I maintain the attitudes and interests of a sculptor. I also work with several themes, inspired mainly by the history and economics of our current society, but always using similar methods and aesthetics. The following can be said for most of my art projects:

I work experimentally, trying out and inventing new materials, tools and images. These experiments often show in the art. I like it when people can see how and guess why I have done something unusual.

I am a storyteller. My art is often figurative in a narrative sense, weaving together absurd and surrealist images, that are however, often based on some real absurdity we have just gotten so used to that we don’t notice it any more.

My art is often funny, in a dark and slightly evil kind of way. It is also playful. This means I had fun making the art, but often also that I invite people to directly play with the art, or to take active part in an art project or installation.

My art is very hand made. I have good craft skills which I am proud of, but I don’t try to achieve hyper realist or factory finished sculptures. I make almost everything myself, always trying to shape it as well and precise as possible, and intend it to still be obvious that art is formed by the hands of an artist.

I got my formal education at Goldsmith’s College in London between 2002 and 2005, but had already made art for a couple of years before that. I have exhibited in a number of project spaces and galleries, mostly in the UK and Europe, but I have also shown in several video festivals and in some art spaces across the world. Since 2011 I have been represented by Krupic und Kersting Galerie in Cologne.
